WWW Wednesday: 14th July, 2021

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Taking on a World of Words. Anyone can take part and it is a great way of sharing what you have just finished reading, what you are currently reading and what is next on the TBR.

Since I last did a WWW Wednesday post, the school term has finished and this teacher is now reading whatever and whenever! I’m now at 70/100 on my Goodreads Challenge.

Links are provided for books mentioned – thanks for supporting my blog with any purchases (at no extra cost to you!)

What have you recently finished reading?

My last update was so long ago that I can’t cover everything I’ve read!

My last book was ‘Meet the Georgians’ by Robert Peal, a lively and enjoyable account of the lives of 12 significant figures from the Georgian era. I absolutely loved this light and often humorous take on some fascinating history – my review is here.

I also read ‘Lying with Lions’ by Annabel Fielding, an engaging historical novel about an archivist who gets caught up in the dangerous secrets of the aristocratic family she works for. This is a blog tour book – my review will be up tomorrow.

Worth a mention as I read it in one sitting, is ‘Let That Be a Lesson: A Teacher’s Life in the Classroom’ by Ryan Wilson. This one was so relatable for me – the highs and lows of a teaching career are all too recognisable to this English teacher! A review will follow next week.

Also worthy of mention is a NetGalley audiobook, ‘This is Your Mind on Plants’ by Michael Pollan. I loved this look at opium, caffeine and mescaline – and particularly the effect on the human brain and body. My review is here.

What are you reading now?

As usual, I have too many books on the go!

In particular, I’m reading ’56 Days’ by Catherine Ryan Howard. I fancied something pacey and lively and this book is hitting the spot – even if it feels a tiny bit too soon to be reading about a lockdown murder!

I’m also reading ‘Empire of Pain’ by Patrick Radden Keefe. After reading about opium in ‘This is Your Mind on Plants’ (above), this seemed an obvious next book – about the Sackler family and their fortune made in the production of Oxycontin, an opioid that has been responsible for high numbers of addictions and deaths. I am loving this compelling book so far – it is both interesting and horrific at the same time.

What do you think you will read next?

I’m on a blog tour for ‘White Spines: Confessions of a Book Collector’ by Nicholas Royle. I’m looking forward to this memoir from an obsessive reader and collector of Picador’s white-spined books.

Other than this, I’m really spoilt for choice. I have so many brilliant books on NetGalley that I can’t choose. I am definitely in the mood for crime fiction again, so maybe ‘The Midnight Hour’ by Elly Griffiths, ‘A Line to Kill’ by Anthony Horowitz or ‘Death and Croissants’ by Ian Moore!

Many thanks to NetGalley, blog tour hosts, publishers and authors for books in exchange for an honest review.
