Books That Matter – April 2021 Subscription Box Review

I’ve been a long-term subscriber to the Books That Matter feminist subscription box, plus have also started the Brave Girls Book Club boxes for my 10 year old daughter.

I’m always pleased by the books and treats thoughtfully put together in these boxes but I have to say that April 2021 is an absolute gem!

Warning: spoilers ahead! If you are waiting for your own box delivery, you might not want to read on.

The Box

The theme for April 2021 is ‘Dare to be Powerful’ and the box is absolutely packed with gorgeous stuff! The theme is inspired by Black Women’s History Month – all the items have been produced by businesses run by black women.

  • The book this month is ‘Conjure Women’ by Afia Atakora, a historical novel set on a ruined plantation in the Deep South of America during the 19th century. I love the sound of this one which seems to have echoes of Toni Morrison’s themes and style.
  • There is also a second book – the interesting-looking collection of essays by Audre Lorde called ‘The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle The Master’s House‘.
  • A pair of ‘Dare to be Powerful’ floral socks.
  • A ‘Pink Salad Ldn’ vegan lip gloss.
  • Two greetings cards with envelopes.
  • A ‘Conjure Women’ postcard.
  • A bookmark.
  • A ‘Dare to be Powerful’ booklet with information about the contents of the box.

My Verdict

I love this box! It is one of the best ones I’ve received (and they’ve all been pretty good!)

I want to read both books, plus all the treats are great quality and will be used. The design of this box is also beautiful with a dark floral theme that links the cover of ‘Conjure Women’ to all the printed materials in the box. As usual, everything is presented and wrapped well.

This is a highly recommended monthly treat!
