Blog Tour: ‘One Last Secret’ by Adele Parks

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for the latest fast-paced and tense thriller by Adele Parks, who just happens to be queen of fast-paced and tense thrillers!

Thanks to HQ for inviting me on to the tour and for supplying a copy of the book for review – opinions are my own, as always.

This had so many intriguing components that I could not say no to this tour. A high-class escort? Just doing one final job before she settles down? In a glitzy chateau in the south of France? Sign me up, now!

Dora is an escort – a high-class, high-rates one who decides to take on one final easy job before she gives up that lifestyle for good. It’s a glamorous trip to the south of France with a trusted regular client. All she has to do is play his devoted girlfriend for the duration of one luxurious holiday. Unfortunately for Dora, things at the chateau aren’t what they seem…

The majority of the book is told from Dora’s perspective and she’s an engaging narrator – yes, she may be gorgeous and young, but there is some serious backstory to add depth to her character. All of which is revealed s-l-o-w-l-y in order to keep the reader on their toes as we meet the different facets of Dora’s character. So far, so clever.

The plot is also cleverly managed – there are sinister hints that things aren’t quite what they seem throughout, but is it just Dora’s paranoia? How reliable is she as a narrator? Or how reliable are the people around her? I honestly didn’t have a clue and was totally shocked by so many of the twists. There’s no way I could see most of it coming…but in absolutely the best way. I guessed, was wrong, guessed again (and again, and again)…and still didn’t get anywhere near the truth!

Although I loved every bit of this engaging story, it’s worth mentioning that there are some triggers around sexual violence towards women – sadly just what you might expect for someone in Dora’s risky job despite the securities she puts in place. However, Parks manages the narrative skilfully and it isn’t gratuitous.

It’s virtually impossible to talk about the plot any more without giving serious spoilers, so instead I’ll just suggest you pick up a copy soon!

I’d recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an immersive and compelling read – this is one you do need to clear the diary for as you will not want to put it down. Empty the diary and settle down to read a rollercoaster of a thriller that will make your head spin!
