WWW Wednesday – 14th April, 2021

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Taking on a World of Words. Anyone can take part and it is a great way of sharing what you have just finished reading, what you are currently reading and what is next on the TBR.

Links are provided for books mentioned – thanks for supporting my blog with any purchases (at no extra cost to you!)

What have you recently finished reading?

Despite it being the Easter holidays (yay!), I don’t seem to have actually finished a lot of books this week. Started a lot, yes, but not actually completed!

I read ‘Both of You’ by Adele Parks for a blog tour in May. What started out as a slow burner became something absolutely compelling and surprising. This is the story of two women missing from their homes…and the secrets that link them.

I finished ‘Insatiable’ by Daisy Buchanan – I put it down to read some blog tour books but it was time to pick it up again! It is very funny, very rude and engaging – the heroine, Violet, really grew on me and I ended up rooting for her to find her happy resolution. Wow, she did make some mistakes along the way though!

What are you reading now?

This has got out of hand in recent weeks – I have a lot of books on the go!

I am still reading ‘Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again’ by Katherine Angel on the recommendation of the lovely Ellie H on Twitter. It is a really interesting look at issues around sex and consent – another one that was put aside for blog tour books but that I’ve nearly finished now.

I’m also reading (for yet another tour) ‘The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls’ by Mona Eltahawy. I am finding Eltahawy’s feminist arguments extremely persuasive so far as she posits that women should be angry and demand attention – to do otherwise, to remain demure and ‘feminine’, is just serving the patriarchy. The breadth of information here – Eltahawy is Egyptian and uses global examples – is both impressive and compelling. This is an important and engaging feminist manifesto and I am looking forward to joining this blog tour organised by Helen Richardson PR.

I am still reading ‘Blue Night’ from the Chastity Riley series of books by Simone Buchholz. I am loving this gritty portrayal of Hamburg and the sassy investigator at the book’s heart. I put this one down for a blot tour but will be picking it up again soon.

I am also reading ‘The Glorious Guinness Girls’ by Emily Hourican. This is a fictionalised account of the lives of the famed Guinness sisters, Aileen, Maureen and Oonagh. I’ll admit that I was expecting a more traditional biography, but this is an engaging piece of historical fiction that is set against the political unrest in Ireland in the 1920s. A blog tour review will follow in May.

I’m also reading ‘Circus of Wonders’ by Elizabeth MacNeal. I’ve been looking forward to reading this tale of a Victorian travelling circus and its star turn, Nellie Moon, the Queen of the Moon and Stars. I’m reading this with the lovely Tsundoku Squad and loving it so far.

What do you think you will read next?

I am so excited to have been granted access to the new Ambrose Parry book, ‘A Corruption of Blood’, on NetGalley. Although I’m finding digital reading a bit problematic at the moment, I really want to read this one – I’ve loved this historical crime series so far and cannot wait to return to Victorian Edinburgh for the next instalment.

I still have my eye on ‘The Road Trip’ by Beth O’Leary – I have loved her other books and cannot wait to curl up with this one.

‘Dangerous Women’ by Hope Adams is another book that seems to be calling to me from my TBR. I am a huge fan of historical fiction, doubly so if it is crime fiction – so this one really appeals.

Many thanks to NetGalley, blog tour hosts, publishers and authors for books in exchange for an honest review.

  1. Fantastic post Kate, it sounds like you are reading some really great books. I can’t wait to read your thoughts on them, although my TBR is probably going to be growing quite a bit aha.

    1. My TBR is out of control – I’m mostly reading whatever grabs my attention at the moment!
